Increasing access, inclusivity and Indigenous equity

West Lincoln Memorial Hospital (WLMH) is a community hospital that has been caring for residents of the West Niagara region for over 70 years. As a site of Hamilton Health Sciences’ (HHS), WLMH serves as an access point to one of the largest health systems in Canada for patients requiring more specialized care.

To support the region’s growing population, HHS is redeveloping its WLMH site to construct a new, larger hospital on the land behind the existing facility. HHS is using a Design-Build-Finance (DBF) model to deliver the new hospital, which will include a 24-hour emergency department, acute inpatient beds, maternal and newborn services, day surgery services, increased ambulatory care and advanced diagnostic services.

Designed to maintain compliance and consistency with all Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) standards, the new facility will extend WLMH’s high caliber of patient and family-centered care, while also incorporating senior-friendly design, accessibility, and infection prevention and control policies, procedures and practices.

The new WLMH building will also include a dedicated Indigenous healing space to accommodate ceremonial practices. This space will be the second of its kind in HHS’ health system and will advance the organization’s goal of promoting cultural safety in an inclusive, equitable healthcare system.

Hamilton Health Sciences is redeveloping its WLMH site to increase space for acute, emergency and ambulatory care in West Niagara.

The new WLMH building will incorporate an Indigenous ceremonial and healing space to support cultural safety and equity.

Hamilton Health Sciences engaged our furniture and equipment team to support the functional planning, procurement and integration of its assets.

Dedicated F&E experts

In support of the redevelopment project, our team is providing comprehensive furniture and equipment (F&E) services throughout all phases of work – including initiation, planning, design, implementation and occupancy.

When it comes to delivering F&E in healthcare facilities, planning is critical. It’s important to identify and integrate specialized equipment and furniture into the facility’s design in the early planning stages to ensure it can support the functional, mechanical and electrical requirements on opening day.

We worked closely with HHS and the WLMH team to develop a functional program and list of assets during the early planning stages of the project. We then helped coordinate all the in- and not-in-contract equipment specifications, and collaborated with HHS’ internal procurement team to sort through different contracts and develop a plan to strategically leverage or source all required assets.

By offering continuous support and team continuity throughout the WLMH project lifecycle, we’re able to clearly understand HHS’ objectives, and work with the WLMH staff and the project team to ensure we’re on track to equip the new hospital according to asset specifications, project budget, schedule and user and patient needs.

Construction on the new West Lincoln Memorial Hospital began in May 2022, with a plan to open the new facility in 2025. With a larger, more inclusive hospital at the WLMH site, HHS will be able to continue to offer specialized care to communities across the West Niagara regions for years to come.
